It's not as surprising when you look at the wind patterns on the tail end. The moving train pushes air aside as it travels, which creates a vacuum right behind the train, pulling snow into this space and swirling it around. This effect can be lessened by streamlining the train, which also reduces the drag generated by this turbulence, and it can be increased by using a boxier design such as the ALP-46. Car design puts a lot into this issue, but for trains, the amount of drag created is negligible to the point of not mattering, at least when compared to forces like gravity, the mass of the train, and tractive effort on the part of the locomotive. This is also the same concept that one sees in aircraft wings and the generation of lift, except that the vacuum is on the top of the wing because the leading edge slows down the air traveling over the wing. At least, that's MY understanding of why all that happens. :XD:
